I am often asked about different types of alcohol. Do they have health benefits? Is drinking in moderation ok? Is it bad to have alcohol? How much is too much? Is one kind of drink better than another?
As I researched the answers to these questions, I came across some very interesting information about tequila.
A specific type of sugar found in the plant that tequila is made from may actually lower blood sugar levels and assist in maintaining a healthy weight. These sugars come from the agave plant which is the same plant that is used to make agave nectar. However, agave nectar has calories and raises our blood sugar.
Agavin is the name of this sugar found in the Agave plant that is responsible for lowering blood sugar levels. It contains GLP-1 which is a hormone that slows the stomach from emptying. Agavin has also been shown to stimulate our metabolism and may even help to dissolve fats.
Before you go grab any bottle of Tequila, there are a few things you should know.
First, drinking too much cancels out the benefits.
The happy point is a 1 ounce serving (1 shot) per day.
Moderation is key.
Too much alcohol lowers our inhibitions and may lead to eating splurges we normally wouldn’t plan on. Regular drinking can also lead to alcohol dependency and other health problems.
Quality is crucial. You will want to choose a top-shelf pure version of Tequila so that you are not ingesting toxins.
Finally keep in mind that a one ounce shot of tequila contains between 64-69 calories.
Do the benefits shown in studies outweigh the calories associated with tequila?
Maybe.
Water also has weight loss benefits, has zero calories and is the foundation of our bodies.
